Connect with your employees with a take 10 check in
How do dentists connect with their employees in dental offices?. One easy way to stay connected and keep the lines of communication open is to conduct daily (starters). Hold daily morning huddles at the same time every morning to ensure team communication and active group problem solving that result in achieving production goals or system improvements. It is important to make a personal connection, make your employees feel appreciated and that they are growing
When you regularly connect with your team members, show you appreciate them and help them develop professionally, your environment will become motivating, encouraging and challenging. You may also find that your team members will start to treat one another differently too
Employees who don’t feel connected, appreciated or who are growing tend to leave in search of a more rewarding experience. Happy employees affect the bottom line. To really connect with your team members in a strong leadership role, try a take 10 Check In. Ask three questions:
- How are you doing?
- How is the team doing?
- How can I help?
Providing feedback to your employees is one of the easiest and, if given correctly, one of the most motivating forms of appreciation. This is also one of the most common requests from employees is to receive feedback. There are various types of Feedback such as:
- Constructive feedback
- Critical feedback
Giving praise can be quick, easy and fun. It is a universal motivator and it’s uplifting. Praise builds people up and shows them you care. Make a rule of thumb to catch your employees doing something right every day and provider spontaneous praise for example; “I like the way you handled that patient…”“Good job”. Make sure that the praise is meaningful and sincere.
Constructive Feedback works like praise, builds people up. Use constructive feedback when:
- Your employee is learning something new
- Your employee is working to improve
- Your employee needs positive correction
When you offer encouragement and information on how to improve and attain the desired results your team member’s confidence will improve
Silence –When you offer no response or reaction, you are sending a message – usually a negative one. Silence is counterproductive and the mainstay of laissez-faire leadership
Critical Feedback – Offering critical Feedback can be the most damaging form of feedback. To be criticized as an adult can be humiliating .Managers who criticize behaviours will find it difficult to keep good ones and will likely experience high staff turnover
Critical feedback shows up in two ways: A manager may criticize behaviours instead of offering constructive feedback to improve. A manager may never say anything about the excellent performance or efforts, but instead only notice the negative
Growth Opportunities – It is important to help your employees grow. With each new challenge that we master comes satisfaction and increased confidence It is important to each of us to feel that we are always moving forward. Most employees want to feel challenged To help your team members grow to take on new responsibilities you need to develop them professionally. Professional development is a reward for good performance
Cross training your team members, asking them to run a meeting, or delegating, etc., are methods of informally developing your employees. Sending your team to training sessions, workshops, courses, is a great way to learn together and to grow together as a team and helps you to get the most bang for your buck ask them to present to the group upon their return
At first changing behaviors is not easy – but with commitment, it becomes easier. It’s the right thing to do for your team, yourself and your office -everybody wins! Remember that it’s a marathon, not a sprint. Your work environment won’t change overnight
